Singapore’s Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen and Germany’s Federal Minister of Defence Christine Lambrecht met to strengthen the bilateral defence cooperation between the two nations following the launch of new submarines for the Republic of Singapore Navy.

Singapore’s Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen and Germany’s Federal Minister of Defence Christine Lambrecht met to strengthen the bilateral defence cooperation between the two nations following the launch of new submarines for the Republic of Singapore Navy.

It is understood that both ministers agreed to strengthen the bilateral defence cooperation established in the 2018 Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) during the meeting, discussing recent geopolitical and security events.

The pair discussed how the nations could cooperate to support the international rules-based order.

Already, both nations undertake military-to-military exchanges, enable cross attendance of professional courses and engage in technological cooperation.

Speaking of the agreement in 2018, Dr Ng explained that the relationship would seek to cooperate and overcome new and emerging threats.

“We signed the first DCA between Singapore and Germany in 2005. Since then, defence relations have grown in breadth as well as in depth … so this enhanced DCA is very timely to consolidate existing platforms and define new areas of cooperation,” he said.

The following day, Senior Minister of State for Defence Heng Chee How met the Royal Thai Air Force’s Commander-in-Chief Air Chief Marshal Alongkorn Vannarot to discuss the countries’ defence relations and how to deepen ongoing defence cooperation.
