The US Army has awarded US automotive manufacturer AM General with a contract for 20,000 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and 10,000 trailers for the US Armed Forces.

The US Army has awarded US automotive manufacturer AM General with a contract for 20,000 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and 10,000 trailers for the US Armed Forces.

The five-year deal was announced by the US Army Contracting Command Detroit Arsenal on 9 February. Deliveries are expected to begin 17 months after the contract is awarded.

AM general president and chief executive officer Jim Cannon said the firm is well positioned to evolve the next generation JLTVs to meet mission demands across a range of military operations.

“We are humbled and honoured to receive this contract and continue our strong partnership with the US Armed Forces,” he said.

“The effort that we put into our winning proposal is testament to our commitment to serve those who serve to protect us.

“It was with the war fighters in mind that we set out to not only demonstrate our world-class manufacturing capabilities, but also to integrate innovative solutions into the JLTV so they receive the best product for their mission.”

The JLTV will be produced in a dedicated military production facility and onsite testing track at the Mishawaka Manufacturing Campus in Indiana. Vehicle enhancements may include enhanced corrosion protection and improved fuel efficiency.
