European defence manufacturer and sensor solution company HENSOLDT has showcased an “MUV” technology demonstration vehicle for German military officials.

The MUV displayed assisted and automated reconnaissance capabilities for representatives of the German Army Combat Training Centre, Army Development Office, Army Command, and Bundeswehr universities in Hamburg and Munich.

The land-based networked sensors were able to detect and classify objects using machine learning algorithms. Using a “Ceretron” computing unit, the sensor network was able to detect real camouflaged combat vehicles under attack, to reconnoitre and transfer them assisted to a command-and-control information system networked with headquarters.

It was also reportedly possible to pass targets between the individual workstations of the vehicle using AI-supported reconnaissance assistance, as well as automatically resolve several threat alarms by networking alarms, optronics, and vision between several vehicles and command posts.

Tanya Altmann, HENSOLDT optronics and land solutions division manager and Optronics GmbH managing director, said the company successfully demonstrated the operational capability of its land-based networked sensors with the technology demonstration vehicle “MUV” during the non-controlled application scenario.

“In the context of ‘FAWU’ (reconnaissance-guidance-effect-support), HENSOLDT sees its role particularly in the context of reconnaissance with fluid transitions to our other competencies,” she said.

“The successful demonstration in Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide has shown that our idea of sensor data fusion, also with a view to the digitalisation of land-based operations, is forward-looking.”
