BAE Systems Australia has subcontracted Raytheon Anschütz for the initial design and manufacture of a warship integrated navigation and bridge system (WINBS) for the Royal Australian Navy’s Hunter Class frigate program.
The contracted work, which has the potential to be expanded overtime, involves systems design engineering and requirements verification for the WINBS.
“The contract signing with Raytheon Anschütz as the navigation system integrator in this early phase of the Hunter program marks the starting point to execute and maximise localisation opportunities with the Australian industry,” Raytheon Anschütz country manager for Australia, Andrè Moritz, said.
“It shows the confidence of both the Commonwealth as well as of BAE Systems Australia in Raytheon Anschütz.”
Raytheon Anschütz is expected to leverage its experience delivering the integration of the WINBS into the United Kingdom’s Type 26 frigates, which inspired the Hunter Class design.
The company has also supported the radar replacement program for the RAN’s existing Anzac Class fleet.
Jörg Dammrich, Raytheon Anschütz’ head of naval surface combatants business unit, listed the capability benefits of the company’s offering.
“WINBS, which is based on our SYNAPSIS integrated navigation system, has become a world-leading, scalable and modular naval navigation solution, and will serve the RAN with a state-of-the-art navigation suite over the coming decades,” he said.
The value of the subcontract has not been disclosed.
This latest award comes just weeks after Rohde & Schwarz confirmed it has signed an agreement with BAE Systems Australia’s maritime division for the design and manufacture of an integrated communications system (ICS) for use on board the RAN’s future frigates.
According to the company, the initial scope includes in-country program management, systems engineering, integration, installation and verification services ahead of the procurement of the integrated communications system for the next-generation anti-submarine warfare vessels.
