Saab outlined that the AN/SPN-50(V)1 radar is the US modification of the Sea Giraffe Agile Multi Beam radar. It is expected that this radar system will serve as the principle surveillance radar for air traffic onboard the US' nuclear powered aircraft carriers and large deck ships.

Erik Smith, president and chief executive at Saab US, outlined that the agreement will use Saab’s expertise to improve readiness and effectiveness.

“By leveraging Saab’s radar technology already in operational service with the US Navy, the Naval Air Traffic Management Systems Program Office and Saab is addressing shipboard air traffic control capability to ensure readiness and cost-efficiency,” Smith said.

The implementation of the new system will be managed by the US Naval Air Traffic Management Systems Program Office.
