Northrop Grumman delivers first Advanced Hawkeye to Japan

Northrop Grumman has successfully completed its first delivery of an E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning and control aircraft (AEW&C) to the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).

Northrop Grumman has successfully completed its first delivery of an E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning and control aircraft (AEW&C) to the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).

The Japan Ministry of Defense competitively selected the Northrop Grumman E-2D to fulfil an emerging next-generation airborne early warning requirement in November 2014.

Japan has operated the Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye since 1983 and is the largest E-2 operator outside the US. The E-2D delivers a two-generation leap in radar technology, allowing the aircraft to track threats at extended range. The aircraft can also be used in a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief capacity for civilian emergency co-ordination.

The E-2D offers interoperability with next-generation aircraft systems and US Navy allies to support regional security co-operation. To ensure long-term success of the Japan E-2D fleet, Northrop Grumman is providing continued support to JASDF in the areas of sustainment and maintenance, in co-ordination with several Japanese firms.

Jane Bishop, vice president and integrated product team leader, manned airborne surveillance programs, Northrop Grumman, said, "Northrop Grumman’s longstanding partnership with Japan is beginning a new chapter with the delivery of the first Japan E-2D.

"This aircraft provides a significant increase in early warning and surveillance capability to outpace Japan’s evolving security needs."

By serving as the "digital quarterback" to sweep ahead of strike, manage the mission and keep net-centric carrier battle groups out of harms way, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is the key to advancing the mission, no matter what it may be.

The E-2D gives the warfighter expanded battlespace awareness, especially in the area of information operations delivering battle management, theater air and missile defence, and multiple sensor fusion capabilities in an airborne system.

With a two-generation leap in radar sensor capability and a robust network enabled capability, the Advanced Hawkeye will deliver critical, actionable data to joint forces and first responders. These advances provide warfighters with the necessary situational awareness to compress the time between initial awareness and active engagement.

Northrop Grumman is a global security company providing innovative systems, products and solutions in autonomous systems, cyber, C4ISR, space, strike, and logistics and modernisation to customers worldwide.
