The Chinese Ministry of National Defense staff have met with Australian representatives for the eighth defense coordination dialogue, in the first formal meeting since 2019.

Both nations’ staff discussed international and regional security issues of common concern and held consultations on promoting practical exchanges and cooperation between the two militaries at the meeting in Canberra on 22 March.

A People’s Republic of China ministry of national defense spokesperson said the two sides exchanged frank and in-depth views.

“The talks further enhanced mutual understanding and is conducive to the healthy and stable development of bilateral military relations,” the spokesperson said.

In other regional meetings, New Zealand officials have met with their Japanese counterparts at the 15th Japan-NZ Military Consultation in Tokyo on 22 March.

NZ Ministry of Defence and International Relations Department director Kathleen Pearce met with Japan Ministry of Defense and Defense Policy Bureau deputy director general Miura Jun.

“Both sides exchanged views on the regional situation and the defence policies of the two countries, and also discussed the efforts of the two countries in the Pacific island countries,” according to a public statement released by Japan’s Ministry of Defense.
