Ukraine could receive a tranche of the Raytheon-built surface-to-air missile systems, according to new reports.
MIM-23 HAWK air defence equipment could be added to the list of military equipment supplied by the United States in support of Ukraine’s resistance against Russia, Reuters has reported.
The surface-to-air missile system could be used to ward off Russian drone and cruise missile attacks.
This would complement Ukraine’s current stock of Stinger missile systems, also supplied by the United States.
According to Reuters, the missiles would be delivered via a presidential drawdown from the Biden administration.
Thus far, President Joe Biden has signed off on 23 drawdowns, with the last package valued at approximately $725 million (AU$1.1 billion), made up of:
- additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
- 23,000 155mm artillery rounds;
- 500 precision-guided 155mm artillery rounds;
- 5,000 155mm rounds of Remote Anti-Armour Mine (RAAM) Systems;
- 5,000 anti-tank weapons;
- high-speed anti-radiation missiles (HARMs);
- more than 200 high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles (HMMWVs);
- small arms and more than 2,000,000 rounds of small arms ammunition; and
- medical supplies.
The United States alone has committed approximately $17.6 billion (AU$28.2 billion) to Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion in February.
